Frequently asked questions.
The most common question we get is, "What is the process of painting a tub called?" This service is known as refinishing, reglazing, resurfacing, or renewing. However, achieving a durable finish involves more than just applying paint and should only be done by professionals with high-quality materials and proper safety gear.
What type of surfaces can be repaired and/or refinished?
Fiberglass, porcelain over cast iron, enameled steel, acrylic, PVC/ABS plastic, plastic laminate, cultured marble, granite, and ceramic are found on bathtubs, showers, tiles, countertops, spas, and pools/steps. We can repair or refinish these surfaces for much less than replacing them. We can also refinish most already refinished surfaces.
How is a tub refinished?
To refinish a porcelain, cast iron, or enameled steel bathtub, first remove the caulk and clean the tub. Next, etch, neutralize, and rinse it thoroughly, then wet sand and clean again. Spray on an acid-based primer, apply a textured floor, and finally, spray on a Poly II top coat. Recaulk between the tub and tile. The finish is a very hard acrylic urethane, not porcelain or epoxy.
For tile refinishing, ensure the tile, grout, and backer board are in good shape. Clean the tile and grout, apply primers, spray on a color coat, and add a clear coat.
For fiberglass, acrylic, plastic laminate, and cultured marble, clean the unit, wet sand the finish, clean again, apply a textured floor, and spray on a Poly II acrylic urethane top coat.
Most refinished units are ready for use the next day.
What type of material do you use to refinish?
Surface Specialists Poly II products stand out due to their high cross-link density, which means more chemical bonds between molecules. This results in greater durability and a longer lifespan for tub refinishing. Poly II combines the benefits of acrylics with the strong performance of an aliphatic-based ASTM Type 5 urethane coating, creating a tough protective layer. Compared to other coatings like low-link urethanes, polyesters, epoxies, and enamels, Poly II offers greater long-term value.
Fully-linked aliphatic acrylic urethanes are used globally in aerospace, maritime, and industrial fields for their superior protection. With a hardness of 4 H-pencil, Poly II is both resilient and popular. As it cures, the pigment settles at the bottom, forming a clear, resin-rich layer on top. This creates a deep gloss (95+) that acts as a "wear layer," ensuring lasting protection for the gloss and color typical of high-quality urethanes.
What colors are available?
We can refinish your surfaces in almost any color! Besides our color page based on Bemis Color chips, if you give us a sample or swatch, our manufacturer can create a custom coating to match it.
Are Polyurethane Coatings better than epoxies?
Both coatings are equally tough and have the same wear. However, urethanes are more resistant to fading and abrasion.
How long will it last?
With proper care, your refinished item will look good for 15-20 years. Refinished wall tile can last indefinitely.
How long will my refinished item be out of use?
Poly II for tubs and showers takes 4 hours to cure, allowing you to use them the next day. Poly II for countertops cures in 24 hours, so wait 48 hours before using the countertops.
What should I use to clean a refinished surface?
Use only gentle cleaners like Spic & Span, blue Dawn dish soap, or vinegar and water. Avoid Soft Scrub, Ajax, Comet, bleach, lemon cleaners, or any abrasive or acidic products for cleaning the bathtub.
Will a repair be noticeable?
Nine out of ten people cannot detect a repair due to high-quality workmanship that blends seamlessly with surrounding surfaces, making it hard to recognize any repair.
Do you provide a warranty?
Yes, a 5-year warranty on refinishes, overlays, liners, and conversions. A 1-year warranty on most spot repairs.
How much does refinishing cost?
You can often get a quote for refinishing by phone, or we can visit your location for a free estimate. Refinishing typically costs at least 80% less than replacement.
Where in the remodeling process does a refinish come in?
When all work around the item is done and the room is as clean and dust-free as possible.
